WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION

The number one question I get asked by my couples after they book with me is: “What should we wear for our engagement session?” — and it’s a great question.

The outfits you choose play a big role in how your engagement photos come together. Thoughtful styling helps your images feel timeless, natural, and truly reflective of who you are as a couple. It also becomes the first glimpse your guests get into your wedding story.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, a few simple styling choices can make a beautiful difference in how your photos look and feel.

Below are a few of my favorite tips to help couples feel confident, comfortable, and completely themselves during their engagement session.

CHOOSE AN ELEVATED VERSION OF YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE

When deciding what to wear for your engagement session, I always recommend choosing an elevated version of your everyday style.

This doesn’t mean you need to wear something overly formal or completely different from what you normally gravitate toward. Instead, think of outfits that feel like you — just a little more polished.

For many of my couples, this means dressing slightly nicer than normal, incorporating beautiful colors, soft florals, or textures that photograph well. These elements add visual interest and movement while still allowing you to feel comfortable and confident.

The goal is simple: outfits that feel natural to you, but elevated enough that your photos feel timeless and intentional.

TIP 1: CHOOSE OUTFITS THAT FEEL LIKE YOU

The most important rule is simple: wear something that feels like you.

If you feel uncomfortable or overly dressed up, it will show in your photos. Instead, choose outfits that feel natural to your personal style while still being slightly elevated for the occasion.

Think of your engagement session as a date night version of your everyday style.

TIP 2: COMPLEMENT, DON’T MATCH

Rather than wearing identical colors, choose outfits that complement each other.

For example:

Good combinations might include:

• soft neutrals + light blues
• earth tones + ivory
• blush + navy

This creates visual interest while still feeling cohesive.

If you're unsure where to start, seasonal color palettes can be a helpful guide when choosing outfits:

Color palettes like these help couples coordinate their outfits while still allowing each person’s style to shine. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and seasonal colors tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than clothing.

TIP 3: MOVEMENT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL IN PHOTOS

Flowy dresses, skirts, and layered outfits photograph beautifully because they add movement and texture.

Movement brings life to photos, especially when walking, twirling, or interacting naturally during your session.

TIP 4: AVOID BUSY PATTERNS AND LOGOS

While subtle patterns can work, bold prints, logos, or large graphics can distract from the connection between you.

Timeless textures like:

• linen
• knits
• chiffon
• denim

tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.

TIP 5: BRING A SECOND OUTFIT

Many of my couples choose to bring two outfits for their engagement session.

A great approach is:

Outfit 1:
Dressy / romantic

Outfit 2:
Casual / relaxed

This gives your gallery more variety while still keeping the experience relaxed and fun.

Your investment guide mentions that engagement sessions allow two nearby locations and outfit changes, which is perfect for creating this variety.

TIP 6: CONSIDER YOUR LOCATION

Your outfits should also complement the location you’ve chosen.

Examples:

Downtown session → dressy, modern outfits
Field / garden session → soft colors and flowy fabrics
Lake Michigan session → neutrals and natural textures

This helps everything feel cohesive and intentional.

At the end of the day, the most beautiful engagement photos happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourselves.

I’m always happy to help couples choose outfits, suggest locations, or talk through styling ideas before their session. My goal is to make sure your engagement photos feel effortless, natural, and reflective of your story.
